On May 6, 1999, Bill Russell, the man who redefineed the center by his unique shot-blocking, man-to-man defense and rebounding ability, and contributed to his team Celtics by his outstanding performance and remarkable leadership, finally attended his own retirement ceremony after 27 years of retirement. This great man in the history of American basketball refused to have a ceremony in 1972 in Boston, the city he perceived as the â€Å"racist city†, because of his concern of discrimination. On February 15th, 2011, Bill Russell received the Medal of Freedom from President Obama for his contribution to civil rights movement. Obama described him as â€Å"the man who stand up for the dignity of all men†. From being insulted, being refused in restaurants during tournaments, intimidating the world with his long arms and strong opinions, to challenging the politics of sports and fighting against racism, it has been a long way for Bill Russell, for American basketball, and for A merican society. March 11, 2012 Twitter, Facebook, Google, Wikipedia and many other sites are some of the most common ways people communicate and use as a leg for viral services. Two laws that are being placed into effect will serve as a hinder to users of the internet and also to many of the websites. If they were to be censored or â€Å"taken away† people would be left dangling wondering what next. Also how censorship may cause some sites to shut down completely. The two laws will cause them to lose their viral services, no longer being able to inform users with information. SOPA (stop online piracy) and PIPA (Protect IP Act) are two acts that are going to be used to censor the internet and sites affiliated with it. SOPA is a United States bill introduced to expand the ability of U. S law enforcement to fight online trafficking in copyrighted property and counterfeit goods as stated on local website Wikipedia. According to Wikipedia PIPA is a proposed law with the stated goal of giving the US government and copyright holders’ additional tools to curb access to â€Å"rogue websites dedicated to infringing or counterfeit goods†. These are both acts that are going to serve as a blockage to the internet. SOPA was first introduced on October 26, 2011 and PIPA introduced May 12, 2011 according to Jamal a local writer. Although they were both introduced recently they are both put on hold due to sites petitioning and finding ways to fight against the two. Sites that would be affected by the two acts were sites like Wikipedia, Google, and many other sites that may provide things like music downloads and other information. To fight against the acts some sites went as far as taking online petitions like having there users go as far signing their email addresses and states to help take a stance. Sites also put a black bar against their logos to show dedication. When asked in a survey that I took â€Å"do you think that the internet should be censored? † 16 out of 20 students said that it shouldn’t the other 4 were undecided. This one question showed just how much students rely on the internet services because if the internet were to be censored they would have no usage of it. Internet sites will shut down due to them not abiding by the standards of the two acts. Sites that the law feel are using more media that is copyrighted and they don’t have permission will be terminated. Which because of this will of course wipe out a majority of the sites that we use. When asked in a survey â€Å"what social networks and websites do you use? And if they weren’t available what would you do? † I received answers like Google, Wikipedia, twitter, and Facebook. People also said that if they weren’t available for use they wouldn’t have a way to do work and maybe not a way to express themselves. Because this would cut into students work this would then become an academic problem which should make law makers think their decisions over. We will investigate how the mass of the potato chips change in different sucrose solution concentrations. We will use osmosis to do this. Because when the sucrose concentration is low, the concentration of water outside the cells of the potato chips will be greater than that inside, and therefore water will osmosis into the cells of the chip which will gain mass. As the concentration of sucrose increases the concentration of water outside the call will eventually become less than inside the cells of the chip and mass will be lost. Because I am measuring osmosis, I will try to keep constant the other that affect osmosis, those other than the concentration of sucrose and water, I will be using potato chips from the same variety of potato (assuming that the genetic make-up and therefore partially permeable membranes will be more similar in make-up). I will use the same volume of solution at each concentration of sucrose solution, that being 20ml3. I will leave the potato chips in solution for the same time at each solution concentration. I will use the same method at each concentration, and for each potato chip individually, in that I will dry the excess water off the chips in a similar manner, and use the same accuracy of the weighing scales, prepare the chips for use in the same way and other aspects. I will keep the surface area of the chips as constant as possible, this being that I will use chips of the same cross sectional area and length. I found in my preliminary work that the chips in the higher concentr ation of sucrose solution tended to float thus excluding a certain part of their cross-sectional area from the solution, I do not know how to stop this. I will carry out all of my experimental work at room temperature and thus temperature will not affect my experiment. I plan to cut out 12 potato chips into cubes of uniform diameter, using a scalpel, and they wont be at a specific size, although they will all be of a unison length and width with the same surface area. For a wider surface area to make it fairer as not all potatoes will have the same amount of skin. Try to keep the potato chips fully submerged, from my preliminary results I have found out that this is a major problem in the experiment and there is not a way to keep them fully submerged while maintaining the same surface area on each potato chip. Try getting chips from same potato for same genetic DNA makeup, the length of storage of potato if different must not be within a day older or newer due to dryness that would affect the experiment. Preliminary workI planned my method following what I found out from my preliminary experiment, the main thing I found out what was that the chips I had used were to big and this created many problems such as Bigger chips needed more potatoes thus not having same DNA makeup. Sometimes half of the chip wasnt submerged in the solution or the chip would be to big and would then touch sides of test tube therefore minimizing surface area. ResultsHere is a table of results to show the masses of potato chips before and after they have been placed in varying concentrations of sucrose solutions. I will also show the percentage changes in mass for each chip. AnalysisFrom the graph we can see that as the sucrose solution increases in molar the mass change in grams changed accordingly, we see that the mass change decreases in a pattern along with the increase in sucrose concentration in molar. As the sucrose concentration increases in molar strength the mass change in grams decreases with a steady ratio. We can see that the point when osmosis is occurring and has occurred (with potato 1) is at 0.415 molar when no mass is lost of added, this is where the sugar levels are the same inside the vacuole of the potato as outside of the potato in the sucrose solution. Potato 2 follows the same pattern just with different statistics, since the potato chips from both potatoes didnt have exact same characteristics and thus not making it as an accurate as possible test. I recorded the state of osmosis at 0.19 molar sucrose concentration.
